The Canadian Tourist Commission (CTC) hired Interpix to help integrate a wide variety of information targeting multiple user groups - foreign and domestic travel agencies, tour operators, government bodies and the media – who want to find relevant information without frustration.

Objectives

  • Provide an expert heuristic evaluation of the travelcanada.ca website
  • Reduce information overload that presented a challenge for users to find the valuable travel information that they were searching for
  • Make recommendations on the site's redesign.
  • Design an intuitive and useful framework that creates a user interface with clear and consistent site navigation, visual design and content organization.

The Interpix Approach

Our simply useful™ user-centered approach was consultative, conversational and interactive - with the aim of transferring usability testing expertise and human factors knowledge to the CTC project team. We began with a review of the current screen designs, functionality, content and information architecture of the site. Based on this assessment, we identified usability problems and successes and made design recommendations accordingly. We developed a design prototype and took it to 5 North American cities for user testing and focus groups, to gather usage perceptions and to validate our preliminary design ideas. We presented our findings to the CTC team in the form of a concise summary containing recommendations for content and functional enhancements.

Success

The Interpix design recommendations led to a vastly improved user experience, giving each distinct user group a smooth, uncluttered flow of relevant information. This enhanced user interface enabled the CTC to achieve its core vision - to compel the world to visit Canada...and keep exploring.
