At Interpix Design we are digital accessibility compliance experts
Ontario is one of the first jurisdictions in the world to enact legislation establishing a goal and time-frame for digital inclusion. Beginning January 1, 2021, all public websites must meet specific rules set out by the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The law requires your organization to identify any barriers and remove them to provide customer service that is more accessible to people who have disabilities.
As user experience design experts, Interpix has been designing inclusive digital experiences for over 20 years. We follow a proven process that seeks to; understand users with laser clarity, evaluate how they use digital products, and refine or design solutions to fix digital problems. Helping deliver real value to your customer drives every digital experience we create.
With the introduction of the AODA–and guided by the internationally recognized Web Accessibility Initiative guidelines (WCAG)–this process has never been more critical. Websites and digital content of public and private companies in Ontario now need to comply with specific accessibility requirements.
Why AODA compliance is good business
Ensuring every user has a positive, barrier-free experience with your website or digital product is fundamental to user experience design. But there are important business reasons too. According to The Path to 2025: Ontario’s Accessibility Action Plan [link to https://www.ontario.ca/page/path-2025-ontarios-accessibility-action-plan] there are 1.8 million people with disabilities living in Ontario, and it’s estimated that a “more accessible province” means up to a $600 a year per capita increase in the gross domestic product. Moreover, AODA compliance is the law. Beginning January 1, 2021, all public websites and web content posted after January 1, 2012, must meet WCAG 2.0 [link to https://www.w3.org/WAI/standards-guidelines/wcag/] level AA compliance.
