New federal accessibility laws are on the horizon! Originally, the legislation was said to be tabled for early 2018, however Kent Hehr, the federal minister responsible for crafting this new legislation says that it should be tabled by Spring 2018.
The new legislation is proposed to have 6 key sections mostly focusing on transportation, employment, and public spaces. The upcoming legislation has said to be based on public engagement including the responses from the accessibility community defining what the biggest issues are for people with disabilities. The survey showed that 25% of people identify that communication, including web accessibility should be an avid part of the legislation. The details of the legislation have not been released, however WCAG 2.0 standards have been mentioned and are likely to be added into the legislation.
Spring 2018 isn't far away!
