Overview

Interpix Design partnered with The Walrus, a registered charity and prominent publishing house in Canada, to conduct a comprehensive audit of their website. With a mandate to enhance the user experience (UX), our objective was to help The Walrus boost its user engagement and increase each visitor’s content consumption per visit.

Who is The Walrus?

The Walrus stands as a beacon of independent, fact-based journalism in Canada. Apart from publishing, they orchestrate national events emphasizing global ideas and invest in the training of budding professionals in the realms of publishing and non-profit management.

The Interpix Design Approach

Given the extensive reach and influence of The Walrus, the task at hand required a detailed approach. We initiated the project with usability testing, employing a select group of testers to gain insights into the user journey and potential pain points.

Throughout the collaboration, our focus remained unwavering: to offer actionable insights and scalable solutions based on empirical evidence. Our task not only included identifying areas of improvement but also proposing tailored strategies to enhance the overall user experience.

Results

From our research, we found a mix of structural and content strategies that could be employed to help hit on the goals of content consumption and engagement. Some such strategies consisted of simplifying and aligning the content model as well as adjusting how content is organized and searched on the website to increase lateral navigation (article to article).

Using our in-depth analysis, The Walrus has been able to build off our recommendations and implement the strategies recommended. This has drastically improved not only the visual appeal of the website, but more importantly, the usability.
